The below picture of an ATV trespassing on the
Superior Hiking Trail/North Shore State Trail, will become sadly commonplace if Lake County and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources get their way in legalizing such use.
At Lake County's request the DNR is poised to "assist and cooperate" in officially converting a portion of the North Shore State Trail that is shared with the Superior Hiking Trail to ATV use. The DNR wants the entire 135-mile length of the North Shore State Trail to become the "backbone of [its] off-highway vehicle [ATV, dirt-bike motorcycle and four-wheel drive truck] system for Northeast Minnesota". The North Shore State Trail parallels, crosses and in some places shares the same treadway as the Superior Hiking Trail.
Help protect the Superior Hiking Trail and
Minnesota's North Shore from
DNR plans to blanket the region with a network of ATV routes.
