BOATING ORDINANCES
From time to time, lake associations consider adopting some type of ordinance to control boats
on their lake, and hire a lawyer to draw up the ordinance. The ordinances I've seen are usually
pretty simple. My impression is a lawyer is not really needed. Listed below are some examples
of boating ordinances from Oakland County lakes published in Oakland Lakefront, (which I think
is the best lake magazine in Michigan right now.)
BASS LAKE --It is unlawful to operate a vessel powered by a motor except when the motor is
electric.
BIG & LITTLE SCHOOL LOT LAKE--High speed boating and water skiing prohibited.
BROOKFIELD POND--Motorboats prohibited.
BUCKHORN LAKE--On the waters of Buckhorn Lake it is unlawful for the operator of a vessel
to exceed a slow, no-wake speed.
CASS LAKE--It is unlawful at any time to operate a vessel in excess of 50 miles per hour.
In the northern portion of Coles Bay it is unlawful for the operator of a vessel to exceed a slow,
no-wake speed.
DEER LAKE--High speed boating and water skiing permitted l0am to 6:30 pm.
It is unlawful to tow or otherwise assist in the propulsion of more than 2 persons at one time on
water skis, water sled, kite, surfboard or other similar contrivance.
On waters in Sections 19 and 30 T4N R9E it is unlawful to exceed a slow no-wake
speed.
HAMMOND LAKE--It is unlawful to operate a vessel to exceed slow no-wake speed on Section
6, T2N Rl0E
KENT LAKE--l0 miles per hour speed limit.
Rubber rafts and floating devices confined to swimming areas.
No person shall operate any watercraft so as to tow a water skier, surfboard, or other towed
apparatus or permit himself to be towed.
LAKE ORION--On the waters of Lake Orion and the canals and channels connected thereto it is
unlawful for the operator of a vessel to exceed a slow, no-wake speed when within 100 feet of
any shore, dock, raft. buoyed or occupied bathing area, or vessel moored or at anchor, except
when water skiers are being picked up or dropped off if that operation is otherwise conducted
with due regard to the safety of persons and property and in accordance with the laws of this
state.
High speed boating and water skiing prohibited during the period of 1 hour after sunset to I hour
before sunrise.
It is unlawful at any time to operate a vessel at a speed in excess of 40 miles per hour.
MIDDLE STRAITS LAKE--On the waters of Middle Straits Lake, Section 7, T2N R9E it is
unlawful for the operator of a vessel to exceed a slow no-wake speed.
On that part of the water of Middle Straits Lake located in Sections 17 and 18, T2N R9E on
Sundays, Memorial Day, Independence and Labor Day, high speed boating and water skiing
permitted 10 am to 6:30 pm.
ORCHARD LAKE--For a distance of 200 feet from the state public access site, it is unlawful for
the operator of a vessel to exceed a slow, no-wake speed.
It is unlawful at any time to operate a vessel in excess of 40 miles per hour.
WOLVERINE LAKE--On the waters of Wolverine Lake, Sections 22, 23,27 and 28, T2N R8E
Village of Wolverine Lake, northerly of a line from where the west line of lot 23, Stuarts Oak
Island subdivision, as extended, intersects that water's edge and thence to the northern most
point of land in outlot "a", Paynes Manor Subdivision, it is unlawful for the operator of a vessel
to exceed a slow, no-wake speed.
On the waters of all artificial channels and canals connected to Wolverine Lake, Sections 22, 23,
27 and 28, T2N R8E, Village of Wolverine Lake it is unlawful for the operator of a vessel to
exceed a slow, no-wake speed.
On the waters of Wolverine Lake, Sections 22, 23, 27 and 28, T2N R8E Village of Wolverine
Lake, between the hours of6:30 pm and 10:00 am of the following day, it is unlawful to:
(a) Operate a vessel at high speed, or
(b) Have in tow or otherwise assist in the propulsion of a person on water skis, water sled, kite,
surfboard or other contrivance.
On the waters of Wolverine Lake, Sections 22,23,27 and 28, T2N R8E Village of Wolverine Lake, it is
unlawful to operate an airboat.
On the waters of Wolverine Lake, Sections 22,23,27 and 28, T2N R8E Village of Wolverine Lake, it is
unlawful to anchor or moor a vessel at a distance greater than 100 feet from any shore between 11:00 am
and 7:30 pm during June, July and August, except those parts of Wolverine Lake established as slow,
no-wake zones.
