Restoring Winter Quiet on Private Property: Closing Unwanted Snowmobile Routes
MRR was founded ten years ago upon a landmark, David and Golliath victory uniting Duluthians to say "No!" to a cross-town state snowmobile trail. Our success in challenging the sacred cow institution of snowmobiling reverberated nationwide as the Anchorage, Alaska Assembly, following Duluth's lead also said "No!" to a cross-town snowmobile route through their city. Since then MRR has assisted private property owners, neighborhoods and communities in closing unwanted snowmobile routes.
18,000 miles of publicly funded snowmobile routes crisscross private and public land in Minnesota. Often private property owners who have an existing route on their land are interested in closing the snowmobile route because of the noise, fumes, danger to others and rude and rowdy behavior. Often it is not just an individual but a neighborhood or whole community that wants to close an unwanted snowmobile route.
A service contract with MRR to restore winter quiet will provide a short course in Easement Education and support needed to withdraw easements or to identify trespass in order to close unwanted snowmobile routes. Identifying other concerned property owners and community organizing is availble when a neighborhood action is needed such as described by the attached Dear Neighbor letter written and distributed by Hermantown residents in restoring winter quiet in their neighborhood.
